The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies and Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies is a community-centered academic unit grounded in the histories, activism, and educational missions that have shaped UT San Antonio. We foster a vibrant learning community where rigorous scholarship, creative inquiry, and community engagement converge to address social, cultural, linguistic, and educational issues.
Through innovative teaching, research, creative scholarship, and community engagement, we explore the intersections of language, education, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality from bicultural, bilingual, diasporic, decolonial, and intersectional perspectives. Committed to academic excellence and social responsibility, we prepare undergraduate and graduate students to become educators, researchers, scholars, advocates, public servants, and community leaders. Our graduates are equipped to serve and lead in schools, universities, nonprofit organizations, cultural institutions, public agencies, and other professional settings, where they work to contribute meaningfully to a just and democratic society.
What We Accomplish
In terms of research, both faculty and students investigate and design innovative practices in the fields of dual-language, bilingual, and/or second-language teaching; multicultural functions of society; as well as immigrant and ethnic identity processes. As a collective, we engage with the cultural and linguistic resources of multicultural communities. As a result, our diverse faculty are internationally recognized for their research and praxis.
