Denise Salas

Denise Salas, a first-generation student from Houston found her calling in the field of education. Growing up in a large, close-knit family, Salas wanted to further her education outside of the bustling city, but still close enough to her family. This led her to choose UTSA, where she felt a strong sense of community and belonging as a Hispanic student.

“UTSA being a Hispanic-Serving Institution, is what drew me in because I wanted to feel at home,” says Salas. “I didn’t want to feel excluded.”Denise Salas

Salas’ passion for teaching began at a young age, as she remembers playing “school” with her cousins and always taking on the role of the teacher. The positive experiences she had with her own teachers further fueled her desire to become an educator herself. “I’ve always enjoyed school and never had a bad experience,” Salas says. “All my teachers have been super great with helping me and being there for me. It made me want to be that person for someone else.”

During her time at UTSA, Salas, has been immersed in the university’s comprehensive teacher preparation program. Salas completed her first semester of clinical teaching in a second-grade classroom and is finishing the year teaching kindergarten at a newcomer school, a specialized program designed to support recent immigrant students with limited English proficiency.

Despite some challenges of working with young learners who are new to the school environment, Salas has found joy in witnessing her students’ growth. She recalls a heartwarming moment, saying, “I had a student with autism who could never remember my name. But one day, he said, ‘Miss Salas.’ I couldn’t believe it, so I asked, ‘What did you say?’ And he said it again, ‘Miss Salas.’ That’s when I gave him the biggest hug.”

In addition to her academic responsibilities, Salas works at the COEHD Student Success Center. In her role she supports by answering questions and providing insights into the teaching profession. Salas particularly enjoys participating in UTSA Day and other recruitment events, where she has the opportunity to share her own experiences and encourage prospective students to consider COEHD. “The role is very rewarding in the same way as teaching because you are able to give insight,” Salas explains.

Her experiences, both in the classroom and at the Student Success Center, have reinforced her commitment to making a difference in the lives of her students, and she is eager to embark on the next chapter of her teaching career.
