The Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) will host its 21st Summer Bridging Institute from July 9-11, 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the UTSA Downtown Campus, featuring a book presentation. The institute offers professional development workshops by local educators for current and future educators of all grades and subjects.

Originally aimed at first-year teachers, the Summer Bridging Institute (SBI) has grown into a comprehensive professional development event for educators at all career stages.

The continual theme of the SBI is to learn, create, and grow. Attendees will explore strategies to support various groups of students, collaborate on how to apply what they learn from SBI sessions into their classrooms, and focus on connecting academic learning to real-life experiences. 

Attendees will hear from UTSA faculty, local educators, administrators, and community members from the San Antonio area and beyond, with an opportunity to earn up to six continuing professional education (CPE) hours per day.

Keynote speakers for SBI 2024 include Belinda Bustos Flores, Ph.D., UTSA professor and Founder and Director of The Academy for Teacher Excellence, and Patricia Martínez-Álvarez, Ph.D., associate professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Flores is a prominent figure in has published numerous books and articles centering on Latino teacher recruitment, preparation, and development. She will be presenting her latest book that she co-authored during a workshop event at SBI. Dr. Martínez-Álvarez, known for her work in bilingualism/biculturalism, and critical disability studies, bring expertise in inclusive bilingual education.
