You're cordially invited to this year's Mexican American Studies (MAS) Teachers' Academy which will be held virtually the week of June 19 - June 23rd, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The MAS Teachers' Academy was created by UTSA MAS faculty in 2015 as part of the statewide movement to bring MAS/Ethnic Studies to Texas K-12 public schools. The only academy of its kind in the state, the MAS Teachers' Academy is a teacher-scholar-community-led effort that provides educators with foundational content and curricular support to teach MAS/Ethnic Studies in Texas public schools. This is our 8th year of offering our one-week summer institute for MAS teachers.

The theme of this year’s academy is on Black and Brown intersecting histories and movements. We believe that social studies primary and secondary teachers in Texas will benefit tremendously from our one-week institute which will focus on the history of Black and Afro-Indigenous communities in Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca, Coahuila); the legacies of the racialization of Black and Indigenous people in the Texas-Mexico borderlands; re-storying the Alamo; Black roots of Mexican independence; the South Texas underground railroad to Mexico; Afro-Mexican foodways as cultural retention; and Black and Brown civil rights movements and cultural/political convergences in Texas.

Our distinguished keynote speakers include:

  • Mario Marcel Salas, "The Alamo: The Mythology of Reality," Assistant Professor of Practice, African American Studies and Political Science, UTSA
  • Doris Careaga-Coleman, Assistant Professor, University of New Mexico
  • Christian Ramirez, "Legacies of Gaspar Yanga: Black Memory, Indigenous Land, and the Contemporary Moment, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology and Sociology, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
  • Sylvia Mendoza, "Expanding Mexican American Studies With/Through Black Feminisms," Assistant Professor, Mexican American Studies, UTSA
  • Marco Cervantes, "Black and Brown Sounds: Musical and Political Convergences in Texas," Associate Professor, Mexican American Studies, UTSA

We're excited to feature the cutting-edge research of these outstanding Chicanx Studies, Latinx Studies, and African American Studies scholars who will share their scholarly expertise, and MAS primary and secondary education teachers who will facilitate curricular workshops and share TEKS-aligned lesson plans. Teachers will also earn up to 15 hours of professional development credits for participating.
