Rosalind Horowitz, American Educational Research (AERA), Special Interest Group (SIG) on Research in Reading and Literacy.
Dr. Rosalind Horowitz has been appointed as chair of the AERA's SIG on Research and Literacy. The goal of this SIG is to stimulate communication and inquiry among researchers, policymakers, and others dedicated to developing and using high quality research in reading and literacy, including writing, from various disciplines and theoretical perspectives. Dues: Students ($5 per year) and faculty and others ($20 per year). Dr. Roxanne Henkin, Professor for the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching has been awarded a $45,000 grant for the National Writing Project 2007-2008. The grant will be used to developed workshops for high school seniors introducing them to college writing, youth writing camps, and a winter writing conference just to name a few. The goal of the San Antonio Writing Project is also to inspire and motivate teachers to become highly skilled teachers of writing for all their current and future students.
Dr. Mari Cortez, ILT Associate Professor, was featured this past Tuesday on our local public televison station KLRN discussing Family Literacy. She was recently interviewed about her research on Family Literacy and Cuentos (storytelling) by Mario Bosquez. She is featured on the show titled ("Ninos en su casa"--Spanish version) or ("A Place of Our Own" English version) discussing the importance of storytelling as a tool to prepare young children for school.
