Grad Spotlight: Lindsey Vela

Name: Lindsey Vela

Age: 40

Course of Study (degree being earned): Ph.D.in Educational Leadership

Hometown: Woodstock, IL

I live in San Antonio with my husband, Ryan, and son, Max. I have a background in both music and education, which I merged with my research study on the arts integration school model for young students. I work with local education agencies[?] throughout Region 20 as a consultant for accountability and assessment and I look forward to continuing to support districts, educators, and students. I chose UTSA because of the supportive cohort model that was offered. Working through this process with a group of peers allowed for collaboration and camaraderie that enhanced my learning.

What was your favorite class and/or who was your favorite professor? Why? Dr. Page Smith was a fantastic professor who shared inspiring stories and thoughts to consider around educational leadership.

Describe any professional experiences or internship opportunities you have had. During my time at UTSA, I was able to speak to potential superintendent program candidates as well as a new cohort of students. I enjoyed giving back to a program that impacted my career.

How has COVID impacted you, either personally or professionally? When COVID hit, it impacted our ability to meet in person, decreasing the amount of collaboration and interaction we had with our cohort members. Though I also enjoy working independently, I missed the conversation with colleagues.

What has brought you inspiration during this time? E.g., music, books, people, etc. I have been truly inspired by my peers. I've watched some prepare to publish and others present at prestigious conferences. It's been motivating to see the drive and passion of those around me.
