About Bicultural-Bilingual Studies

Our department has a strong tradition of preparing successful educators, researchers, and community leaders. We seek students who hope to make an impact in their professional and personal worlds, therefore offering both undergraduates and graduate students an exceptional curriculum. Upon graduating, students leave our programs prepared to participate critically in the creation of a more just and democratic society, whether this is in schools, non-profit organizations, universities, or research tanks.

What We Accomplish

texler3.jpgIn terms of research, both faculty and students investigate and design innovative practices in the fields of dual-language, bilingual, and/or second-language teaching; multicultural functions of society; as well as immigrant and ethnic identity processes. As a collective, we engage with the cultural and linguistic resources of multicultural communities. And as a result, our diverse faculty are internationally recognized for their research and praxis.

Bicultural-Bilingual Studies (BBL) was one of the founding academic units when the University of Texas at San Antonio was founded in 1969. Half a century later, our department still offers a dynamic learning community where students benefit from rigorous scholarship and experience both in the classroom and in the local community.
