Welcome to TExES

The May and June practice tests have been canceled. Contact Carisa Kohutek at carisa.kohutek@utsa.edu for information. Testing sites, including the UTSA testing services, are now open for scheduled appointments. Check with testing sites regarding COVID-19 policies.

If you completed an educator certification program at UTSA in the 2019-2020 academic year, then you may be eligible to obtain a probationary certificate for the 2020-2021 school year without passing your certification tests. Read the Texas Education Agency’s Guidance on Educator Certification and Preparation. If you think you are qualified, contact the Certification Officer at teacheradvising@utsa.edu or 210-458-6287.

TExES Information

Texas law requires every person seeking educator certification to perform satisfactorily on comprehensive examinations. These examinations ensure that each educator has the necessary content and professional knowledge to perform satisfactorily in Texas public schools. Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) were developed for this purpose.

State Exams- NEW TEA RULE effective September 1, 2015:
Individuals may take the same state exam a total of 5 times. After the fifth attempt, TEA will have to give approval to retake the exam.

The Texas Education Agency is planning major changes to the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) and Core Subjects tests. Candidates certified after January 1, 2021 will have to take an additional certification test on the Science of Teaching Reading. The PPR multiple choice test may be replaced by a performance-based assessment. These changes will require extra expense and effort. You may be best served to pass these tests sooner rather than later.

NEW Educator Assessment Timeline (Current as of 11/20/2019)*

*Please note: If you are currently or a past teacher candidate seeking teacher certification, we recommend passing all existing exams before the new assessments are implemented. If you have not passed the PPR before the implementation of the edTPA, you will not be allowed to take the edTPA and cannot be recommended for teacher certification.
