Graduate/Professional Certification

Overview Admission Checklist

Overview

Individuals interested in being a school counselor, reading specialist, principal, or superintendent require certification for their professional positions. Individuals may also obtain a graduate degree with initial teacher certification (EC-6 Bilingual Generalist and EC-6 ESL Generalist concentrations) through UTSA's Professional Certification Programs.

** Each program contains different requirements and deadlines resulting in varying times of completion.

** It is highly recommended that you contact the Student Development Specialist listed for specific program requirements, deadlines, applications, and other assistance.

Professional Certification

Professional Certification is for educators who have already earned their undergraduate degree (or higher), their initial teacher's certificate, and require certification for entry into a professional career (Principal, Reading Specialist, School Counselor, Superintendent). Please note that in the state of Texas, some Professional Certifications require a minimum of two years teaching experience.  Please contact the Student Development Specialist or department advisor to learn the specific program requirements.

Graduate Degree with Initial Certification

Students seeking initial certification who already hold a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university may enroll in a graduate degree certification program. Requirements for graduate programs vary, please review the desired degree program page and contact the department for specific details. Students must apply and be accepted through the Graduate School.
