The UTSA College of Education and Human Development’s Academy for Teacher Excellence Research Center (ATE) recently produced a short documentary that highlights the work that four local male educators of color are doing to inspire future educators.

“Con Ganas: Inspiring Male Educators” follows the story of four San Antonio educators who have been working in their districts to encourage males, particularly young men of color, to become teachers.

“This film is very important and timely because of the underrepresentation of male educators of color in our schools,” said Dr. Lorena Claeys, film producer and ATE executive director and research associate. “It is imperative to promote teaching as a profession among young men if we want to address this shortage.”

The film features Leandro Gonzalez from Northside ISD, Jon Derrick Alvarez from San Antonio ISD, Samuel Ebong from Southside ISD, and Peter Martinez from North East ISD. The film also features Dr. Edwin Barea-Rodriguez, associate dean in the UTSA College of Science.

“These four teachers are role models in the community, and their passion for teaching is driven by their desire to make a difference in the lives of their students,” said Claeys. “We hope that, through this film, viewers will be inspired to take action and promote the need for more male educators of color.”

“Con Ganas,” which was directed by local videographer Jesus Miguel Garcia, will be screened as part of the San Antonio Film Festival. The screening will take place on Friday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Information about the screening and tickets can be found on the San Antonio Film Festival website
