Sarah Aguirre, Field Education Specialist at UTSA’s Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies, has been appointed to assist in the revision of the Reading Framework for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

The NAEP reading assessment measures students’ reading comprehension skills in literary and informational texts. Its frameworks describe the specific knowledge and skills to be assessed and how the assessment questions should be designed and scored. Aguirre is a member of both the Visioning Panel and the Development Panel for this project.

In October, she attended a Visioning Panel Meeting where she collaborated with other panel members to create a set of guidelines for the Development Panel to consider while updating the Reading Framework.

“The Visioning Panel’s charge was to bring our collective and individual experiences with education research, policy, and practice to the task of re-visioning a NAEP Reading Framework for the 2025 assessment and beyond,” Aguirre said.

Her experience as a teacher, as a parent of school-aged children and as a colleague of literacy researchers allowed her to contribute multiple perspectives to Visioning Panel discussions. As part of the Development Panel, Aguirre will also be involved in monthly meetings through March 2020 to update the Reading Framework, which will be released for public comment in the summer.

Reflecting on her appointment, Aguirre said, “I feel both honored and humbled to be selected for this opportunity to work alongside some of the most respected researchers and educators in our field to create a Reading Framework that will lead the Nation.”
