UTSA was named a recipient of the ILA National Recognition with Distinction for the Interdisciplinary and Learning Technology’s M.A. degree in Literacy. Their work demonstrates the literacy professional programs are exemplary and adhere to a rigorous set of standards, according to the ILA website. The National Recognition with Distinction is ILA’s highest honor awarded to an institution.

ILA states that the recognition shows the teacher candidates are well prepared and ready to meet the challenges of today's classrooms. It also shows that the program helps all students become lifelong literacy learners.

Dr. Samuel DeJulio also believes the recognition is a confirmation to the quality of work the ILT department has been performing. “We have long recognized the dedication of instructors and people throughout the department who contributed to the success of the program, so the award reinforced much of what we already believed,” said Dr. DeJulio.

The award also assists with marketing the program, finding new resources for the college and providing support for grant applications for funding, whether it be from foundations or state/federal governments. The recognition will not only help grow ILT’s Literacy program, but make sure they continue on the right track. “Receiving the ILA Certificate of Distinction was a call to continue pushing our program forward. We recognized that we are doing a lot of things well, but we must continue to practice toward the possible in order to realize the shared vision of our Department and College,” said Dr. DeJulio.
