Dr. Mari Riojas-Cortez, from the department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, was recently selected by the National Association for Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE) to receive the 2019 Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator Award.

The NAECTE grants their awards based on nominations from fellow peers or self-nominations. Each award given by the organization is also sponsored by a top publisher–Pearson, Taylor & Francis, Cengage–and includes a substantial monetary prize.

Dr. Cortez was selected by the NAECTE because of her “meritorious leadership and professionalism in early childhood teacher education.” She recently attended the NAECTE conference this fall, where she received her award on November 20th.

“I have been actively involved in the early childhood field for a very long time,” states Dr. Cortez. “This award is important to me because it signifies the value and respect my peers have for my work in early childhood that started as a bilingual prekindergarten teacher in the Harlandale Independent School District in San Antonio in 1988.”
