Three professors from the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Counseling recently received the Professional Writing Award from the Texas Counseling Association for their book “Child and Adolescent Counseling Case Studies: Developmental, Relational, Multicultural, and Systemic Perspectives.” The award was presented during the 2017 Professional Growth Conference.

The book, co-edited by counseling faculty Drs. Brenda Jones, Thelma Duffey, and Shane Haberstroh, is comprised of more than 25 case studies that highlight effective mental health practices for working with younger populations.

“One goal for writing and co-editing this book was to enhance the knowledge base and clinical skills of counselors in their work with the youth population,” said Jones, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Counseling. “Children’s past life experiences continue to shape their present, and counselors who work with children and adolescents serve as ready resources and sources of guidance to help youth traverse life’s unpredictable pathways.”

The book features case studies written by leading mental health counseling scholars, including Haberstroh, Duffey, Jones, and COEHD alumnae Stacy Waterman, Noreal Armstrong, and Maria Haiyasoso.

“An impressive roster of contributors from the counseling profession across the nation were asked to submit current and relevant cases that offered a variety of professional and clinical perspectives,” said Jones. “Cases included topic-related breadth and depth to enhance role play activities, and discussions about the challenges clients and counselors face while working together within family, school and peer systems.”

The Professional Writing Award is given annually to an individual or group of individuals that demonstrate high-quality and successful writing in the profession of counseling. The book, which was published in early 2017, is available on the Springer Publishing website.
