Dr. Eunhee Chung, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition, was awarded an American Physiology Society (APS) Research Career Enhancement Award to attend a special workshop in Austria this fall.

This October, Chung will travel to Schroecken, Austria, to attend the Oroboros Instruments Workshop. This workshop is designed to train researchers on the latest data analysis software and lab equipment.

“I hope to learn how to use the O2K-FluoRespirometer, which measures mitochondrial functions simultaneously, such as oxygen concentration, respiration, and hydrogen peroxide production,” said Chung. “I also want to fully understand data analysis techniques using DatLab 7 software.”

Chung hopes to apply what she learns from the workshop to her current research study, which looks at the impact of voluntary maternal exercise on genes associated with mitochondrial biogenesis. Mitochondrial biogenesis is the growth and division of mitochondria, which are organelles that help cells produce energy.

She believes that the training acquired because of the APS Research Center Enhancement Award will help her develop the technical skills necessary to enhance her research,

“Our study is novel and has potentially interesting inquiry, but the lack of direct measurement of mitochondrial function limits the significance of our study,” Chung said.

Throughout the six-day workshop, Chung said she hopes to learn as much as she can from international colleagues, developers, and manufacturers.

“I am very much looking forward to attending the workshop,” said Chung, who plans to bring back that knowledge with her to UTSA to collaborate with other faculty members in the department and expose students to these research techniques.
