The UTSA College of Education and Human Development has named Dr. Sara Oswalt, associate professor of health, as the new chair for the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition. Oswalt will begin her leadership role on August 2.

As the chair, Oswalt will oversee the faculty and staff in the department. She will also assist in the management of the departmental budget and will work with other leaders around the university.

“One objective that I want to focus on is how we can collaborate across all three distinct programs towards one or two common goals that can elevate the department,” said Oswalt. “I’m also excited about the opportunity to really showcase our faculty. Our faculty are doing great things and I am excited to be able to work more with them and tell UTSA, the San Antonio community, and beyond about what they are doing.”

Oswalt also hopes to establish a stronger mentorship program in the department that not only provides guidance for junior faculty, but also for mid-career faculty.

“Often times when you get tenure, its kind of like you’re done,” said Oswalt. “I want to explore how we can work with faculty who are already associate professors and look at their next steps, what is their career path is and what they want to do.”

Oswalt received her Ph.D. in Health Promotion and Behavior from the University of Georgia. She joined the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition in 2004 and has served as the coordinator for the department’s Health Program since 2009. She has also held leadership positions in professional organizations, which, she believes, will be an asset to her role as department chair.

“I hope I am going to bring positive energy as well as more direction and refinement in our goals as a department,” said Oswalt. “I am really interested in a collaborative and transparent leadership where the decisions are made by groups and with an understanding of why those decisions are being made.”

The college also named Dr. Alberto Cordova, associate professor of kinesiology, as the new assistant chair. Cordova joined the department in 2008. He currently serves as the graduate advisor of record for the Master of Science in Health and Kinesiology program and the director of the Developmental Motor Cognition Laboratory.
