The College of Education and Human Development recently named Dr. Belinda Flores, professor and chair of the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, as the new Associate Dean for Professional Preparation, Assessment, and Accreditation. Flores will begin her new leadership position on July 1.
“I am very excited and honored about being named Associate Dean for Professional Preparation, Assessment, and Accreditation,” said Flores. “I am looking forward to working with colleagues across the college, university, and community in this capacity.”
In her role, Flores will oversee and support the professional educator certification and preparation programs in the college at the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate levels.
“One of our greatest strengths in the COEHD at UTSA is that we have a majority-minority student presence and we are located within a diverse community,” said Flores. “We are the crucible that can demonstrate the preparation of a diverse student body for a complex world.”
Flores will also be responsible for representing the college at statewide education meetings and will work closely with departments and offices across the college and university, including the Office of Teacher Education Services and the Office of Undergraduate Student Success, as well as the University of Texas System on program assessment and accreditation.
“I plan to work closely with Dr. DelliCarpini, associate deans, and faculty. I envision myself as a leader who will assist the college in identifying, defining and achieving a unified vision for the area of professional preparation while maintaining our commitment to the communities in which we reside,” said Flores.
Flores received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in Curriculum and Instruction and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from UTSA. She joined the university in 1992 as a Title VII coordinator, and for the last five years has served as the chair of the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies. Her research focuses on teacher preparation and bilingual education.
“It is important to recognize that the COEHD has excellent professional preparation programs that have achieved national recognition,” said Flores. “I plan to guide and support the departments as we collectively identify where we will journey together towards professional preparation in a globalized world.”
