The UTSA College of Education and Human Development has named Dr. Patricia Sánchez, associate professor and co-director of PIVOT for Academic Success, as the new department chair for the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies. Sánchez will begin her new leadership role on July 1.

“To be quite honest, it feels a little surreal to be the new department chair,” said Sánchez. “I have great respect for the two previous chairs before me who shaped so much of my experience and journey from junior professor to senior professor. I am honored to serve in this capacity and hope I can continue to build upon the excellent groundwork they have laid.”

As the department chair, Sánchez aims to provide support for the department’s faculty, particularly junior faculty advancing through the tenure process. She also hopes to promote the unique research and community engagement projects that the department’s faculty and students are carrying out.

“As a collective, our department is involved in dynamic work in different arenas,” Sánchez said. “I’d like to make these contributions more visible to a wider audience. I also think that the unique history of the department as a founding division of UTSA needs more prominence and visibility.”

Sánchez joined the Bicultural-Bilingual faculty in 2004. She received her Ph.D. in Education (Social and Cultural Studies) from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to her new position, Sánchez served as the graduate advisor of record for the Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language program from 2011 to 2014. She currently serves as a co-director for PIVOT for Academic Success, a Title V grant that serves first generation college students in the UTSA community.

“I think that my leadership style is more of being a collaborator and facilitator; I prefer to lead by example than with unquestioned authority,” she said. “In my particular case, I am taking the helm of a good department at a good moment. I think this is an important context to embrace and leverage during my term as chair.”
