Partner for Science Learning Design Institute (PSLD) is a collaboration of the National Writing Project and the Association of Science-Technology Centers.  The institute, funded by the National Science Foundation, provides a forum for educators from formal and informal settings to develop ideas about how educators can work together at the intersections of science and literacy. Representatives from the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies (CITL) represented UTSA and the College of Education and Human Development at the most recent PSLD in March.

The local San Antonio partnership between the San Antonio Writing Project and the DoSeum formed a team of four to represent intersections of science and literacy in the San Antonio area.  From March 15-18, 2017, Dr. Alicia Villarreal, CITL research coordinator, and Amanda White, Teacher Consultant with the San Antonio Writing Project, traveled to Philadelphia, Penn., to explore potential goals for the San Antonio Writing Project and DoSeum partnership. Ideas were developed for possible collaborative projects by considering mutual missions, goals, and potential local funding sources.

During the institute, science and literacy partners across the country shared the work they are engaging in to create authentic learning spaces in their communities and invited visiting partnerships to actively participate in these experiences. For four days, the San Antonio team explored meaningful connections between science and literacy through intersected activities, including blackout poetry with science-based expository texts, a create-your-own-insect space, and an outdoor discovery writing excursion. Collaborative de-briefing sessions occurring after each experience encouraged all partnerships in attendance to make connections across current and future endeavors between classrooms and science centers alike.

Villarreal and White supported partnerships in determining opportunities for intersections of the fields of literacy and science in their local communities. The San Antonio Writing Project and the DoSeum plan to continue their collaboration in designing dynamic, innovative, and authentic learning experiences that embody these intersections for children and young people in the San Antonio area.
