English for International Students (EIS Classes)

UTSA wants all international students to successfully complete their undergraduate and graduate studies without the hindrance of inadequate language proficiency in English. Therefore, international students accepted into UTSA, but whose Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are between 500 and 599 (paper version), 61 and 99 (IBT), or 5.0 and 6.5 (IELTS) will be required to take English classes for International Students (EIS).   EIS Course Description

Undergraduate students will be required to take from one to four courses:

Reading 1083

Writing 1093

Listening 1063

Communication 1073

Graduate students will be required to take from one to three courses:

Reading 1183

Writing 1193

Communication 1073

** Students must take the ELAP to determine the number of courses to be taken

** For additional information see the EIS Course Description

Registering for EIS Classes:

Undergraduates must contact their advisor to register for classes.  New Undergraduate Students do not need to contact the EIS Office.

Graduate students can send an email to stating preferences for course schedule (1st, 2nd and 3rd choices) and we will register you for courses.

  • All EIS classes MUST BE COMPLETED in the first 2 semesters, and at least half must be taken in the first semester
  • Students who are required to take EIS classes and DO NOT register for them or DROP them before  successful  completion will be withdrawn from the University and will jeopardize their visa status
  • Once students successfully complete the required EIS classes, the registration hold is removed from their record

Cost of EIS Classes:

EIS courses are charged at the rate of undergraduate international student tuition fees (including the courses for graduate students).  Completion of these courses will be required during the first two semesters of attendance at UTSA and are in addition to any already established degree course requirements. Check with fiscal services for exact cost of EIS courses.
