Biography


Dr. Roxanne Henkin, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning & Teaching at The University of Texas at San Antonio, earned her doctorate from Northern Illinois University and has 18 years of teaching experience in public schools. She then taught at National-Louis University in Chicago before joining the faculty at The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2003.  Dr. Henkin’s research interests include confronting bullying through literacy, inclusive classrooms, supporting LGBTQ+ students, critical literacy for social justice, writing process and instruction, in-service staff development in literacy, and multiliteracies and multimodal digital literacies. She has published many articles and two books, Who’s Invited to Share: Using Literacy to Teach for Equity and Social Justice and Confronting Bullying: Literacy as a Tool for Character Education, both published by Heinemann. 

 

Dr. Henkin is Past-President of Literacies and Languages for All (formerly Whole Language Umbrella). She also served on the executive committee of the National Council of Teachers of English. She was also the lead co-editor of the journal Voices from the Middle (2006-2011) published by the National Council of Teachers of English.  Dr. Henkin is the Director Emeritus of the San Antonio Writing Project, which is associated with the National Writing Project with almost 200 sites across the country and around the world. She has received many awards including the 2020 Literacies and Languages for All Lifetime Membership Award, the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award from Niles North High School in Skokie, Illinois, the 2015 Outstanding Literacy Alumni Award from Northern Illinois University, and NCTE’s 2009 Halle Award. She was also awarded the UTSA 2009 President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Community Service and the 2012 Headliner Education Award from the Association for Women in Communication, San Antonio Texas among other awards. She has helped to create and teach writing projects in South Africa, India the Philippines, and Kazakhstan.
