Professional Development for Writing Teachers from the San Antonio Writing Project

All Super Saturday events are free to UTSA students, faculty, and SAWP Teacher Consultants

October 15 – Writing the Future of Bullying: It Really Can Get Better

  • From 9AM – 12 PM at UTSA- Downtown
  • Keynote Presentation by Chris Navarro
  • Come hear presentation on how to use technology in powerful ways for teaching.  Lean about new tools and resources you can ring into your classroom to promote 21st Century literacy. 
  • Cost $20.  Attendees earn three PDSs

 November 5 – Turning Back, Turning Forward: Reflection in the Writing Classroom

  • From 9 Am – 12 PM at UTSA – Downtown
  • Keynote presentation by Dr. L. Lennie Irvin
  • Many teachers avoid using reflective assignments because they take extra time and seem to have questionable results.  This Saturday will feature presentations revolving around the use of reaction in the writing classroom to help students learn and grow as writers.  Building on various theorists of refection such as John Dewey, Kathleen Yancey, and Donald Schon, this workshop will focus on practical ways to make reflection work in your classroom.
  • Cost $20.  Attendees earn three PDSs

 December 4 – Cuentos Project Open Mic Reading and Celebration

  • From 1-3 PM San Antonio Public Library – Downtown
  • Teachers and their students engaged in the Cuentos Project of telling family stories will share some of the stories they have written in a public reading.  This event celebrates young writers and the power of story. 
  • This even is free and open to the public.

 February 4 – San Antonio Writing Project’s Sixth Annual Teacher’s Conference

Avoiding Writicide: Valuing Writing in Tough Times

  • Keynote Presentation: Jeff Anderson
  • From 9 AM – 12:30 PM at UTSA – Downtown
  • In times of tight budgets, constricted and even scripted curriculums, and low teacher morale, teachers need more than ever ideas and inspiration to spark confidence and a love for writing in today’s students.  This conference will offer sessions where San Antonio Writing Project Teacher Consultants will share activities they have used in their classroom for the teaching of writing. Jeff Anderson will also present a keynote session at this conference.
  • Cost Free.  Attendees earn three PDSs

 March 4 – SAWP Writing Marathon

  • From 11 AM – 3 PM at San Antonio Public Library—Downtown 
  • Join fellow writers and teachers for a morning of walking and writing and fun.  Marathoners start together and then walk in any direction they choose, writing as they go, and then return to share what they wrote.  Participants need good walking shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather. 
  • This event is free and open to the public.
