School Counselor Certification

Purpose of Program

State Certification as a professional school counselor is awarded to students who complete the Master of Education in School Counseling Degree. Program graduates will demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, identity and scholarship for a successful school counseling career. Developmental and relational processes, creativity, ethics, and diversity are emphasized and taught through relationships developed with students, area school districts, communities and other university programs. Graduates will apply the knowledge, skills, ethics and professionalism acquired in the program to the diverse, multicultural populations this career field serves.

Program Options

To receive state certification as a professional school counselor, students must:

  • ††Complete the masters degree program,
  • ††Pass the required School Counselor Certification Exam, AND
  • ††Complete two years of teaching experience before certification is conferred

Career Opportunities

Upon graduation and state certification, a variety of career opportunities in education, non-profit, private, state and federal sectors are available, including: elementary, middle and high school counselor positions; at-risk specialty counseling positions; college admissions, compensatory, special education and other school district identified areas of need; and guidance and counseling coordinator or director positions (with advanced supervision/administration training).

Admission Requirements



All applicants must meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements and be in good standing with last institution attended. In addition, applicants must meet/fulfill the following departmental requirements or submissions:


Certification is offered only to those already admitted to the Master of Education in School Counseling.


Master of Education in School Counseling Admissions Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) during the last 60 hours of their undergraduate studies to be eligible for admission to the counseling program
  • ††Applicants without adequate coursework preparation in education, psychology, sociology or a related field may be required to take COU 3103 Helping Skills and, at the discretion of the admissions committee, complete up to 15 additional hours of leveling courses as a condition of admission
  • ††Applicants should complete three Applicant Rating Forms and provide a two-page narrative statement of interest
  • ††International students must have a TOEFL score of 600 (paper based) or 100 (internet based)
  • ††Interested applicants should contact the student development specialist for the Department of Counseling for application assistance
