Purpose of Program

The Graduate Certificate in iSTEM Education (Interdisciplinary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is designed for graduate students from all disciplines who wish to focus on issues related to Interdisciplinary STEM Education. The goals of this program are:

  • To prepare educators to both teach and integrate STEM Education into curricula and programs for diverse learner populations
  • To increase STEM Education literacy for formal and informal educators

Program Options

This certificate includes approaches that explore teaching and learning between/among any two or more of the STEM subject areas, and/or between STEM subjects and one or more other academic subjects.  Students in this program will encounter an integrated approach to a body of knowledge for current STEM educators, introducing them to the foundations, pedagogies, curriculum, research, and contemporary issues of each of the STEM disciplines as well as posing new integrative ideas, approaches, and instructional materials.

Students pursuing this program will complete the following 4 courses:

  • C&I 6613 Nature and Meaning of Interdisciplinary STEM in Education
  • C&I 6623 Inquiry in Interdisciplinary STEM Education
  • C&I 6633 Equity, Agency, and Participation in Interdisciplinary STEM Education
  • C&I 6963 Interdisciplinary STEM Education Trends and Issues

Career Opportunities

This certificate is geared for formal and informal educators, including K-12 teachers and administrators in STEM classrooms. Students who work in informal learning settings (e.g., museums, governmental agencies, and non-profits) will have opportunities to explore and implement interdisciplinary alternatives to traditional STEM education.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements and be in good standing with last institution attended. In addition, applicants must meet/fulfill the following departmental requirements or submissions:

Current graduate students must submit a program application through the certificate program advisor

Applicants not currently enrolled must apply as a special graduate student, meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements, and:

  • Hold a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution 
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in last 30 hours of baccalaureate program and all previous graduate work
  • Be in good standing at the last institution attended
