Graduate Certificate in Environmental E-STEM Education

Purpose of Program

The Graduate Certificate in E-STEM Education is designed for graduate students from all disciplines who wish to focus on issues related to STEM education within the contexts of sustainable management of the environment and natural resources.  The goal is to provide graduate students with a comprehensive educational foundation for understanding local and global environmental issues and the analytical skills needed to effectively implement instructional strategies for various audiences.  




Program Options

The E-STEM certificate program integrates environmental education concepts, teaching methods, best practices, and issues and actions in environmental education.  This certificate is aligned with the North American Association for Environmental Excellence (NAAEE) Accreditation in Environmental Education, and completion of the certificate will prepare students to apply for the Texas Environmental Education Certification (TEEC).  


Students pursuing this program will complete 4 of the following courses:


  • C&I 5933    Service-Learning
  • C&I 6513/ECE 6513    Grant Writing
  • C&I 6733/ECE 6733    Fundamentals of Environmental Education
  • C&I 6773/ECE 6773    Environmental Education in the Curriculum
  • C&I 6903/ECE 6903    Environmental Issues Investigations
  • C&I 6943/ECE 6943    Interdisciplinary Internship




Career Opportunities

Career opportunities include outdoor educators and program directors in museums, science centers, nature centers and environmental education programs. E-STEM students might also pursue careers as natural resource managers, instructors in experimental outdoor education programs, program managers for non-profit field science schools, and outreach educators for advocacy and conservation groups.

Admission Requirements



All applicants must meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements and be in good standing with last institution attended. In addition, applicants must meet/fulfill the following departmental requirements or submissions:


Current graduate students must submit a program application through the certificate program advisor

Applicants not currently enrolled must apply as a special graduate student, meet UTSA Graduate School admission requirements, and:


  • Hold a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in last 30 hours of baccalaureate program and all previous graduate work
  • Be in good standing at the last institution attended


** Students who do not meet the minimum admission requirements or require assistance should consult the program’s Student Development Specialist and the Graduate School Catalog for assistance.
